Essential Questions
The following is additional information that applies only to honors students, and the Math 4 syllabus applies for all other course information.
Honors Credit
This option requires that students be self-motivated to learn additional concepts, complete additional challenge problems, and explore additional topics on a project. You will also be required to serve as a peer tutor and/or teach several topics to the class. If you are interested in honors, you must sign and return the contract within the first two weeks of the semester. For this you will receive honors credit and your transcripts will show Honors Calculus rather than Math 4.
Calculus Honors Course Work
High Tech High North County is committed to providing you with the experiences you need to be successful in life. An integral part of that success takes place in college which is why we are excited to offer an Honors Credit Option during your senior year. Below is a brief description of the major requirements for the Honors Credit Option:
Math Appreciation Reading and Analysis
We will be reading Here’s Looking at Euclid by Alex Bellos. Your goal is to incorporate something that inspired you from this book into your Math Exploration Project or build your project from a concept in this book. Your final presentation on the Math Exploration Project will include one of these various formats: a powerpoint (or equivalent), film, art piece, play, game, or something approved by Mr. Bunce. Your goal is to show the world how math can be fun. Instructions for each format will be available in class. If you want to present the book in a different way (other than a presentation) Mr. Bunce must approve your method.
Critical Thinking and Collaboration
Meet every two weeks for Honors Happy Hour. During this time we will discuss Here’s Looking at Euclid, brainstorm project ideas, work out math problems, watch short films and have post-film discussions, solve math puzzle games, Q&A, work time, etc. Because you will do graded work in these meetings, they are mandatory. You will also get participation points for attending.
Leadership
Each student will engage in peer assistance (mentoring). You will be providing academic assistance to another student or to a small group. This will count toward your weekly homework points. You are required to do at least 30 minutes a week of peer tutoring.
Presentation
You will complete a project related to the honors reading. This must be presented to the class at the end of the year.
Rigor
You will be responsible for additional in-class course work on a regular basis. For example you may be asked to answer more challenging questions, to do more rigorous homework, complete additional sections on exams, complete calculus labs, etc.
College Preparation
You have the opportunity to get extra credit by sitting in on a college math class. After getting permission from the professor, take notes on: the lesson taught, teaching style, expectations for students, engagement of the students, and any other observations you make. You will then share your experience with the class in a 5 minute presentation for a possible 20 points of extra credit.
